Early crime reports documented by CrimeMapping.org suggest that some violent crimes such as assault will be down from the totals seen in 2009 (the latest annual statistics provided by the New Orleans Police Department). However, others such as rape/sex crimes may be on the rise. Overall property crimes are looking to take a positive turn downward.

At the end of 2011 New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu commented on the current state of violent crimes in the city, particularly the murder rate. "New Orleans is one of the safest cities in America if you're just talking about violent crime. We're number seventy three. The one area where we're really doing very, very poorly, and have been for the last twenty years, is the murder rate."

Those comments came as the final numbers for 2011 were being complied. After holding steady for several years around 175 homicides the number jumped 14% in 2011 to 199 murders.
